Francisco Cândido Cebola was a able sailor aboard the American tanker Louisiana when it was sunk on August 17, 1942, 200 miles from French Guiana.

The Louisiana was torpedoed by U-108 at 23.49 hours and a plane spotted three survivors on a raft. Despite searches carried out in the following days, no one was found.

All 49 crew members were presumed dead.

Despite being born in Portugal, Francisco Cebola is referred in some places as an American citizen, and it is possible that he acquired this nationality sometime during his life.
