The squadron was moving to the Middle East and the ditching happened on the coast line four miles south of Caparica because of a fuel shortage.

The crew arrived on land without help. On the next day, with escort of the Portuguese International Police (PVDE), they went to Lisbon and contacted the British Embassy. There they stayed in the Suisse Atlantic Hotel before they were transferred to Caldas da Rainha.

They were repatriated on July 12.
