The year of 1943 marks, however, a turning point in the Battle of the Atlantic with new tactics, means and technology allowing the Allies to change the course of it. The u-boats went from hunters to prey, while the number of sunk merchant ships dropped rapidly.
This change was reflected in the number of rescues performed by Portuguese ships from mid-1943 to the end of the war.
